One Room Challenge – Operation Mudroom – week 4

I’m participating in the One Room Challenge (ORC) put on by Calling it Home.  I am linking up with them as a guest participant! Check out what everyone is doing in week 4!

ORC

Accomplished this week:

  • Tile update
  1. Install cement board
  2. install tile
  3. clean tile
  4. apply grout release
  5. grout
  6. clean tile several times
  7. seal

Numbers 2.75-6 were completed this week. At the end of last week, #2 was about 3/4 of the way done. Our mistake this week was that we accidentally sealed the tile instead of applying the grout release. I think that was kind of my fault as I kept asking if that was the next step. I think that put the idea in Parker’s mind that we were suppose to seal, grout, seal. It really should have gone grout release, grout, seal. We had even bought the grout release. I think we were thinking that was suppose to be used if we were having trouble getting the grout off the tile. Oh, well. It ended up being no big deal at all. The grout came off the tile just fine. Sometimes we rely too much on memory, and the last time we tiled was several years ago.

Tile done!

  • Some electrical

Parker rerouted the wiring that was where our door is now. He felt comfortable doing this, and it actually went pretty quick. So its some money we can save when we hire the electrician to wire our new lights and add some new light switches.

Ordered this week:

  • A new desktop to take our desk from a corner desk to a straight desk.
Our Corner of the World Blog | Operation Mudroom - one room challenge week 4 | Pottery Barn desks
We have the Pottery Barn desk on the left. We are rearranging it to the set up on the right.

*Sale alert: Many parts of this line are on sale right now. The top was $30 off plus I got %15 off of that (using an online code that currently shows up on their site) and free shipping (using ship to store)! #neverhurtstoask

I think we will also probably sell our corner piece and the current desk tops (they are like caps) along with the glass we had over them. Hopefully we can lessen the cost even more that way.

  • Wall hooks

CB2 Zuzu wall hooks. These will go on the wall behind the door to the garage. There will be a bench below the hooks.

Decisions made this week:

  • baseboard
Our Corner of the World Blog | Operation Mudroom - one room challenge week 4 | Metrie baseboards from Carter Lumber
We will order this baseboard. So happy it fit in the budget! We decided on the 7.25in. because we didn’t like the ratio of straight to diagonal on the 5.5in, and I found more than one resource that said this height would work with 9ft. ceilings. I was worried it would be too big. #twss #tryingitagain #someoneacknowledgeit
  • casings
Our Corner of the World Blog | Operation Mudroom - one room challenge week 4 | Metrie casings from Carter Lumber
We chose 3.5 inch casings because we have some doors in our house where a bigger casing wouldn’t work. In addition, I found some websites that suggested your casing be about half of your baseboard.
  • Moldings will go all the way to the ceiling instead of 3/4 of the way up the wall. I looked at lots and lots of pictures to make this decision. The only reason I was considering NOT going all the way up was because I want dark moldings but also want our black hooks and black gooseneck lights to stand out. I decided that I would rather compromise on the color of the moldings than the style if my “ideal” doesn’t look right with our goosenecks and hooks.

You can see some of the pictures that inspired our molding/baseboard/casing choices in Tuesday’s post.

Decisions we still have to make:

  • crown molding

Unfortunately, the crown that goes with our baseboard and casings doesn’t knock my socks off. So, we are still trying to decide what to do with the crown. We aren’t sure if we should order our baseboards and casings until we are more clear. We would hate to pay shipping twice.

  • Are we putting lights on the lockers?

Parker is worried about there not being enough light in the room. Our main light is only 1 60 watt bulb. However, we will also have the two goosenecks. This ends up being the same amount of wattage that we had with our boob light, which was plenty. However, the wattage will be in different spots in the room. I was voting no on locker lights because of cost – more money we would have to pay the electrician and money for light fixtures. However, Parker may have convinced me to change my mind minutes ago when he brought home a $10 light fixture that I am pretty into! Whenever he says, “you’re either going to love this or hate this,” I usually hate it. #butikindoflovedit #hatetoadmitit

Coming up this week:

  • Seal tile
  • Start building lockers
  • Order baseboards, etc.
  • Finalize electrical plan and schedule electrician (yes, this was on last week’s list….we can’t decide about lights on lockers!!!)

I hope to get a lot done this week! Check back in with us next week, and you can also check out week 1, week 2, and week 3.  You can also follow me on pinterest, twitter, instagram, bloglovin’, or by subscribing. All of that can be done by clicking the links in my sidebar.

  1. The floor looks awesome! Also, you could have Parker build a simple base to the desk top you’re going to get rid of and then sell it as a whole for more money! 🙂

    1. Thanks! I can’t wait to see what it looks like with the rest of the room…lookin a little rough in there still 🙂

    1. Thanks!! I don’t think we will finish by the end of the challenge, but I know it will be great when it’s done. I hope you will come back and check it out!!

  2. I always think Justin goes overboard on lighting, but then I don’t regret that we have it. Light that highlights certain features in the room or shows off neat architecture (like your built-in lockers) usually adds sooo much to the overall “wow” of the room (plus it’s practical). Bye-bye budget, sorry.

    1. Yeah, basically…bye bye. We do think we figured out a way to save money on the electrician, but we will see if it lessens the cost as much as we are hoping. I think we are in that mode now where its like – we’ve come this far and spent enough money that we might as well spend a little more and be totally happy at then end. We aren’t going crazy, just trying to do it well so that we don’t have regrets and so we don’t have to redo anything later.

    2. Also, I saw you had another comment and accidentally hit delete instead of “not spam.” Anywho…You said that Justin likes the squared off baseboards. I like those, too. I just like these better for our decor. I think the ones we picked can go with lots of different styles, though. And I never really thought about kids hitting their head on the square baseboards, but that is probably true!

    1. Hi Sean. We used Metrie baseboards and crown. We ordered them from Carter Lumber.
