We bought a mattress on the internet! If you think that sounds crazy, let me explain the benefits and our experience.
First of all, Parker and I have a history of bad luck picking beds. The first bed we bought together was a Tempurpedic. It was expensive, and I ended up not liking it. I have a back that tends to flare up, and the bed seemed to give me trouble. I will, however, mention that I’ve since learned that sleeping with a pillow between my legs makes a big difference in fending off back issues! We were able to return the bed, but the trial period was short and we had to pay a restocking fee. Next, we bought a pillow top mattress. This, along with the wrong high heels, ended up giving me the worst back issues I’ve ever had. Several weeks in physical therapy put me back to normal, but needless to say, we also returned that bed and paid another restocking fee. We decided to give up on finding a bed for awhile and slept in a double bed for the first few years of our marriage.
As we were expecting our first daughter, we decided to give bed buying another go. We bought an Ikea Sultan Fjordgard. It felt comfortable at the store, and the price was extremely reasonable. We weren’t sure on the first night we slept in it, but we ended up LOVING this bed! I give it a 10/10 for comfort (we like a firm bed), a 10/10 for price, and a 7/10 for quality only because on Parker’s side you began to see divets where he slept from the foam of the mattress not bouncing back. We had the bed for 6ish years. Overall, Parker still found it comfortable. The main reason we decided to get rid of it was because our son needed a bed (so we passed it on to him), and we wanted to upgrade to a king size.
So we recently started the bed hunt again. I had seen some advertisements online for several mattress companies that operate either exclusively or primarily online. As I began to check them out, I decided this was the route that I wanted to take. Here are the benefits of the companies we were considering:
- reasonable prices
- long trial periods (usually around 100 days)
- easy returns with no restocking fee
- shopping ease with no pressure
- most (maybe all) do not use brominated flame retardants (I watched a special on these that freaked me out. If you know stuff that will freak me out about my new mattress don’t tell me.)
So, we ended up choosing Tuft & Needle because it is rated highly on Amazon, and it only cost $750 for a King size mattress! We also watched Youtube videos and read online mattress comparisons before making the purchase. The mattress arrived a few days after we ordered it from Tuft & Needle. I recommend purchasing on their site because if you purchase on Amazon, there is a shorter trial period.
We waited a night or two to sleep on the bed because it did have some off gassing. After sleeping on the bed a few weeks, my feelings were that it wasn’t perfect (not as comfortable as our Ikea bed), but I could live with it. Parker didn’t think he could. He did not feel supported on the bed. He’s a bigger guy (not the tall kind of big….hahaha…he said I could say whatever I wanted if it made people laugh, and that makes me laugh 😉 ). Really, though, Parker was a high school and college linebacker with huge muscles who has different priorities now. Anywho, we emailed Tuft & Needle, and they gave us some suggestions on where to donate the mattress. That’s how you “return” the bed! You simply donate the mattress and scan your receipt of donation. I LOVE that. We donated to St. Vincent de Paul. We scanned the receipt, emailed it to Tuft and Needle, and our money was credited back to our account. I love that somebody who needs it will get our almost brand new king size mattress. So basically, the mattress wasn’t for us, but I was happy with the company. There were really no negatives to our experience. We didn’t lose anything by giving it a try.
Yet, we still needed a mattress. Our next purchase was from * Helix Sleep. It has all of the benefits of the Tuft and Needle, but it is a little more unique in that they try to customize the mattress to you. They will even design two halves differently. You go through a series of questions:
- age, height, weight
- which side you sleep on
- body style (different pictures to choose from)
- preferred sleep position (side, back, stomach)
- how hot you get at night
- what kind of mattress you like (I think 7 levels from very soft to very firm)
- what kind of mattress you currently have and if you like it
- medical sleep conditions
These questions help them determine where your red dot should go in the following 4 categories:
Here is where Parker and I ended up:
I would say we are both very pleased with the mattress! It is very comfortable!! This one came in at $1045 after a $50 promo code. The only thing I would do differently is pick the option that says I “sweat buckets” rather than “have to stick a leg out.” I don’t think I am sleeping any hotter than usual, but I do sleep hot quite often. I mean I am FREEZING when I go to bed, but I inevitably wake up sweaty in the middle of the night pretty often (on this and other beds). I think its hormonal, but I should have taken that into consideration. I think I was afraid I would be cold or something if I picked “sweat buckets.” That was stupid. I’m not sure that picking the other option would have really made any difference, but it would be nice to feel like I gave myself the best chance 🙂
So it turns out, buying a mattress online really isn’t that crazy. It’s actually a pretty simple process and I think getting quite popular. I think Tuft & Needle may have been the first, but there are lots of these types of companies now. You can find lots of reviews and videos online to show you the differences. Most of the companies seem to have great websites, too. You can get a lot of questions answered by checking out the FAQs, emailing the company, or even talking to someone live in a pop up chat box.
Anybody else have an internet bed? What kind? How do you like it? Any questions about our experience?

Super helpful! ❤️
I’m glad!!
I like this post! We need to try helix. What does point elasticity mean?
Here is how they explain it https://helixsleep.com/shop/details. My understanding is for example, women have hips. If you are a side sleeper, you want the mattress to give a little (have a little elasticity if you will) where your hips are so that the mattress forms to your body a bit instead of creating uncomfortable pressure points. FYI, I hated the tempurpedic. I don’t think it feels like that at all. The tempurpedic didn’t feel supportive. This bed is very supportive and we’ve chosen it to be firm. But the point elasticity still allows it to feel comfortable and not like a brick.
