One Room Challenge – operation mudroom – week 6

I’m participating in the One Room Challenge (ORC) put on by Calling it Home.  I am linking up with them as a guest participant! Check out all of the reveals in week 6!

ORC

I really wish we had a final reveal today, but I knew that would not be probable from the beginning. While this is “week 6,” it has only been 5 weeks since we started the project. The week 1 post basically came on day 1 for us. In addition, we both work full time and didn’t hire any of the work out. My hope is that anyone visiting from the one room challenge will follow me until the final reveal because the best is yet to come!

I promise a highly functional unique pretty mudroom that you won’t want to miss 🙂

Here’s what we were up to this week:

Last week we were debating on locker lights. We needed more light in the room since the overhead light we picked has just one bulb, and the gooseneck lights will be directed down at the desk. However, the electrical cost of adding lights to the lockers was more expensive than just buying a different overhead light. Plus, I was nervous that the lights on the lockers would look weird. So here’s what we decided on – Parker would do the electrical to significantly lower the cost, and we decided to move the location of the lights from the middle of the lockers to the top (see below). After lots of thinking and worrying and debating, I think we landed on the best option!

We decided to move the lights (the circles) from the middle to the top. I think this has less risk to look weird. Also, since Parker did the electrical, I wouldn’t feel like we wasted too much money if we decide we don’t like the look of the lights. We can just get rid of them. A blank panel at the top of the lockers will just look like taller crown. A blank panel in the middle would look like something is missing.

Here is the fixture we have chosen for each locker light

The fixture is on the right, but we will replace the bulb with a mirrored bulb, which you can see on the left. The bulb we have right now is too big, so we couldn’t show you the bulb and the globe at the same time. The lights are only $10 each plus the bulb! I think they are going to look really cool when all put together.

Parker did all of the electrical work, and we hung the goosenecks! Love them!

We got some paint samples

Dark is Sherwin Williams Iron Ore and lighter is Sherwin Williams Grizzle Gray. Lighter feels safe and Iron Ore feels exciting. My only concern is that you won’t notice the beautiful lights.

We moved our desk (with new top) into the room to get a better feel and to give you a better idea of what the room will end up looking like.

When we were picking up the paint samples, we ended up being in the right place at the right time. Parker was asking a few questions about the products we might use to paint the cabinets, and a professional cabinet painter walked in. He gave us lots of helpful advice and also gave us his card in case we have any questions. Love when stuff like that happens!

Lots of work is coming up this week. Our trim is arriving this Friday (a week early), which is perfect because we are ready for it! We ordered a few single pieces of crown and architrave to try to customize our own crown molding, so we will figure that out first. Once we know what pieces we are going to need to build the crown, we will order more of those pieces. Parker will then also be able to start the lockers since he will know how much space is needed at the top. I’ll be here next week updating you again, so I hope you will join me!

  • electrical and 2/7 lights hung
  • ordered new desk top, hooks, trim

Still to do:

  • build lockers
  • figure out what crown molding will look like
  • install baseboards and window/door casings
  • install crown
  • paint lockers and trim
  • farmhouse moldings on walls
  • paint walls
  • hang hooks
  • hang remaining lights

  • build stairs in the garage to lead up to the mudroom door

I’m sure we still have a few weeks left, but each week should give me something fun and new to share! See you back next week!

  1. Oh, I can’t wait to see the final reveal…and I agree with you that the lights may get lost against the darker wall. You two have certainly undertaken quite a project.
Have a great weekend…I can guess what you’ll be doing.
